Solar Baking: Revolutionizing Bread Production in Lebanon

Exciting news from Lebanon!

Toufic Hamdan, the founder of ” Partners with Sunhas developed a revolutionary solar-powered convection oven that could potentially reduce the production costs of bread and make it more affordable for the people of Lebanon. This is a significant breakthrough, considering the rising cost of food in the country, which has led to a crisis.

Located in the village of Remhala, 27km south of Beirut, this pioneering solar power system is installed on the rooftop of a bakery.

Large silver mirrors capture the sun’s rays and magnify them to build heat, which is transported by a transfer fluid used to operate the convection oven. This allows the oven to reach a baking temperature of around 300 Celsius, making it perfect for industrial use in the baking industry.

The solar convection oven uses an innovative heat exchange mechanism, which is currently under review for a patent in the Netherlands.

  • The oven is expected to save bakery owners about 80% of their monthly usage of diesel, reducing the price of bread and making it more affordable for consumers.
  • According to Hitaf Ghazal, co-founder and operations manager of Partners with Sun, it would save at least around 10 tonnes of diesel a month per bakery.

Wissam Shamseddine, owner of the Al-Wissam bakery in Remhala, is testing out the pilot oven provided by Partners with Sun. He says, “It saves on our production’s diesel consumption and gives us better quality. We are still in the trial period we started with them. I hope we can continue, and it gives us what we need so we can rely on it.”

But that’s not all! The solar-powered oven is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly, reducing energy costs and food prices, and avoiding the need for polluting fuel boilers.

Toufic Hamdan, the inventor, aims to “bury the last boiler operating on diesel or electricity in food and beverage production” between now and 2030. This is an ambitious goal, but with this groundbreaking technology, it could become a reality.

By using clean, renewable energy, the solar-powered oven is revolutionizing bread production in Lebanon, providing a solution to the country’s food crisis, and promoting sustainable development in the region. We can’t wait to see how this innovative technology can transform the food industry in Lebanon and beyond.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates.
